How To Spend The Longest Day of the Year

Hello summer!

Friday, June 21st marks the Summer Solstice, or longest day of the year, which is when the sun reaches it highest point in the sky and you get to kick off the first day of summer. So, how will you spend your day? We’ve got some suggestions to make the day memorable. Whether you enjoy the outdoors or want to have some quiet, reflective time, we hope it’s a day to remember.

  • Wake up early to see the sunrise. Wipe that sleep out of your eyes & start the day off right with a glorious view of the sunrise. There’s nothing like the peaceful, tranquil feeling of witnessing the whole world come alive. You’ll see everything in a new light and it just might energize you for the rest of the day.
  • Eat some strawberries! If it works in Sweden, why not? June tends to be the beginning of strawberry season in Sweden, so they celebrate the solstice by eating strawberries in many different ways. Smoothies, shortcake, sliced on pancakes – you can’t go wrong! And you can never have too many strawberries since they can be frozen or made into a delicious jam. Check out this delicious jam recipe.
  • Paint, draw or photograph outside. Take advantage of the golden light to capture the world around you. Even if you don’t typically think of yourself as a “right brain” person, you have the ability to tap into the artist within. And if you already consider yourself an artist, let it shine! Set aside any self doubt and don’t be afraid to experiment on this special day.
  • Stay up late to see the night sky. Fingers crossed that you get a clear night away from city lights where you can gaze at the celestial show. Give yourself 15 minutes to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and you’ll be amazed how many things come into view. The website, skyandtelescope.com, is a great source for beginners to find out what’s going on in the night sky above you.

It’s a warm and wonderful time of the year. Grab a picnic, fly a kite, build a sand castle – the summer solstice is a perfect day for appreciating the beauty around you. Enjoy all of the beauty of summer!
